Biography:
Jonathan served in the Union Army during the American Civil War from 1863 to 1865. He was a prisoner at the Alabama Cahaba Prison from 9/1864 to 3/1865. On his way back to Indiana, he was on the steamship, Sultana, which exploded north of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Over 1700 people died in the marine disaster. Jonathan survived. In 1868 in Milan, Indiana, Jonathan married Anna Margaretha Hoeft.
